The following questions are mostly about cannabidiol, which we get asked frequently. The questions and answers will help educate you about this cannabinoid.
2. Is CANNABIDIOL oil legal?
Yes – CANNABIDIOL oil obtained from hemp is legal, because the FDA considers hemp-derived cannabinoids to be food-based products, so their importation and consumption is not restricted. However, it is not legal to grow hemp in most U.S. states. For this reason, many companies producing CANNABIDIOL oil or other cannabidiol-rich supplements, source their hemp from countries where it is legal to grow it – one of the more common ones is Canada. Industrial hemp can be legally grown in most countries and CANNABIDIOL oil can be purchased in most of those countries.
3. If CANNABIDIOL is obtained from hemp, does it mean I will get high from consuming it?
No – You will not get high from cannabidiol oil. Cannabidiol is one of the two most prominent cannabinoids in the Cannabis plant, the other one being THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Both occur in this plant naturally, and can be found in higher or lower concentrations, depending on the plant variety, i.e., Cannabis Sativa L (industrial hemp) or Cannabis Indica (marijuana).Cannabidiol is not psychoactive, which means you cannot get high from cannabidiol-rich products.
Conversely, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a strong psychoactive substance that when used, can result in a high. If you consume products made of specially-bred industrial hemp plants (Sativa L variety), you shouldn’t experience any unwanted effects. Hemp contains little to no THC and is actually federally regulated to contain less than .3% THC, while recreational cannabis can contain between 5 to 25% THC.
4. How is CANNABIDIOL oil obtained?
Cannabidiol oil is generally obtained from hemp through either alcohol or CO2 extraction processes. We use hemp because it doesn’t contain THC, and we opt for this alcohol extraction because it is the best and enables us to produce oil that yields the full spectrum of cannabinoids in the Cannabis sativa plant. Our extracts contain a multitude of cannabinoids with positive effects, as well as terpenes, minerals, fatty acids, and vitamins. All these substances make our products nourishing and we recommend them for dietary and skin-care uses.
5. Can CANNABIDIOL oil cure any condition?
Our partners produce cannabidiol oil that is sold as a dietary and or personal-use supplement, so we’re not making any medical claims. However, we do encourage you to research this topic yourself, as there are trustworthy websites where you’ll find studies on the effects and benefits of cannabidiol for various conditions. We may refer to such studies here, but only to inform you about them. Our cannabidiol products are not intended to treat, cure, or prevent any disease although it is quite possible those suffering from any one or more of a variety of ailments could see benefit from taking cannabidiol.
6. Is your CANNABIDIOL oil synthetic or natural?
Our partners extract cannabidiol oil from industrial hemp, so our products are all natural and, are organically grown. Industrial hemp is naturally rich in cannabidiol and low in THC, so we use this plant to make sure the final product contains a multitude of useful compounds and no psychoactive substances.
7. Does CANNABIDIOL oil cause side effects?
Hemp is considered generally safe, so there shouldn’t be any significant side effects of cannabidiol, but we can’t rule them out as it really depends on how your body tolerates and adapts to these dietary supplements. We recommend that you consult your physician before using any dietary supplement, including our cannabidiol oil.
8. Why should I use cannabidiol oil from your products instead of relying on cannabinoids from marijuana?
Technically, cannabinoids from marijuana and cannabinoids from hemp are the same, meaning that they have the same properties. However, as previously explained, hemp contains very little to no THC. Marijuana on the other hand is very high in THC (usually between 5 to 25%) and makes you high. Therefore, you should opt for hemp cannabidiol oil if you intend to use it as a food supplement. If you take THC with cannabidiol, the effects of THC will be diminished as cannabidiol attaches to the same receptors in the endocannabinoid system.
9. How much CANNABIDIOL oil should I take?
This really depends on which product you are using, how you use it and how your body adapts to it. We recommend starting with 1-5 drops per serving, once or twice per day and determine if this dosage works for you. If it’s the first time you’re using a hemp-oil supplements, we encourage you to discuss use with your healthcare practitioner if you have specific questions.
10. What is a “Tincture” of cannabidiol hemp oil?
A tincture is a liquid made from a plant “extract.” A tincture typically contains a solvent agent such as food-grade alcohol to keep the plant extract in a usable liquid suspension. Pure hemp oil (100%) is extremely viscous, sticky, and difficult to dispense or use hence, the use of alcohol to keep everything in suspension.
11. Where does your hemp come from?
Our hemp is produced from specially hybridized organic hemp that our partners grow in Colorado and has some of the highest levels of Cannabidiol in the U.S. The concentrated hemp oil extract that we produce from our own carefully grown plants provides the best balance of cannabinoids and highest purity cannabidiol.
12. What is the best way to produce CANNABIDIOL-rich cannabis oil?
The cannabis oil that is typically available in dispensaries is THC-dominant with little cannabidiol. To extract cannabidiol-rich cannabis oil, one must start with cannabidiol-rich plant material. There many ways to extract oil from the cannabis plant, each has its pros and cons. Some methods are safer and more effective than others. Cannabis oils made with neurotoxic solvents like butane and hexane may leave unsafe residues that interfere with immune function and impede healing. Thus, the two main methods of extraction are ethanol (food-grade alcohol) and CO2.
13. Can I get CANNABIDIOL from juicing raw cannabis?
By juicing or otherwise ingesting raw, unheated cannabis, one consumes THC and the other cannabinoids in their acid form. A cannabidiol-rich strain contains cannabidiol-acid (cannabidiol A), which, when heated, becomes cannabidiol. Unheated cannabidiol A and unheated THCA (THC-acid) both have medicinal attributes, but there has been comparatively little scientific research into cannabinoid acids.
14. Is a cannabidiol-dominant cannabis strain with very little THC better medicine than a cannabis strain with a fifty-fifty cannabidiol-THC mix?
First, we cannot tell you that cannabidiol has curing properties. However, scientific research has shown that a cannabidiol-dominant strain or product with little THC is not necessarily a superior treatment option compared to a balanced cannabidiol-rich remedy with an equal amount of cannabidiol and THC. A cannabidiol-dominant extract or strain might be optimal for treating anxiety and seizure disorders, but patients with pain syndromes and neurodegenerative disorders may benefit from a substantial amount of THC. Cannabidiol and THC act synergistically to potentiate their respective therapeutic attributes. Different ratios of cannabidiol and THC are more suitable for different conditions and different individuals.
15. Will I flunk a drug test if I medicate with cannabidiol-rich cannabis?
You may fail a drug test even if you experience no mood-altering affects from your cannabidiol-rich medicine. Drug tests are geared toward identifying THC, not cannabidiol or another cannabinoid. If one medicates with cannabidiol-rich cannabis that has a small amount of THC, the THC may register on the drug test. However, if you are a competitive athlete, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) no longer screens for cannabidiol.
16. How is cannabidiol metabolized when consumed orally?
Is it converted to another compound? Cannabidiol is metabolized into an analogous compound, 7-hydroxy-cannabidiol, by the liver. Some 6-OH-CANNABIDIOL may also be formed. But scientists know relatively little about the activity (or lack thereof) of these compounds. There is strong evidence that cannabidiol does not convert to significant amounts THC in the stomach.
17. I reside outside the United States. How can I obtain CANNABIDIOL-rich remedies?
If you live in one of the 22 countries that have approved GW’s Sativex, a fifty/fifty cannabidiol/THC whole plant under-the-tongue spray, you may qualify for a prescription. Cannabidiol-derived from industrial hemp grown in Europe is legal and available in the European Union. The Dutch Health Ministry distributes a cannabidiol-rich cannabis strain to patients enrolled in the Netherland’s official medical marijuana program. the official Israeli medical marijuana program also grows and dispenses cannabidiol-rich strains. those who live outside the U.S. can also visit—or coordinate with a friend or relative in—Colorado or Washington, and other states where cannabis is legal and available for personal use for those
21 years or older.
How one elects to travel with or transport their medication, which is prohibited by federal law, is their own responsibility. High quality cannabidiol-rich products are also available in California. To be in receipt of any California cannabis product one must be in possession of a valid medical cannabis recommendation letter from a California physician. Some patients and/or caregivers come to California and establish a temporary California residence to obtain a California ID. With this ID, they can see a California medical cannabis expert, get a letter of recommendation, and then obtain cannabidiol-rich medicine. Many patients and their families have relocated to cannabis-friendly states to access cannabidiol-rich medicine on a consistent basis.
18. I am from a state where medical marijuana is not yet legal. How can I obtain CANNABIDIOL-rich remedies?
You may be in luck. An advisory committee for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday, April 19, 2018 recommended approval of the first pharmaceutical grade cannabidiol (CBD) medicine to treat severe epilepsy. Also, to access cannabidiol-rich products, most can now be shipped to 50 states. Please consult the legality of these products in your state.
19. Why are scientists trying to do more research on cannabidiol when there are so many journal articles reporting its benefits?
Although cannabidiol has been studied since its molecular structure was elucidated in the mid-1960s and there have been numerous cannabidiol lab studies (using mice as test subjects), only a few clinical studies (using people as test subjects in a controlled setting) have been conducted. While these studies strongly suggest that cannabidiol will benefit people, more real-life investigation is called for.
20. I have heard that cannabidiol is the dominant cannabinoid in hemp plants. can i just smoke or ingest hemp or ditch-weed to get the healing effects of cannabidiol?
It is true that hemp fiber or seed strains will be relatively high in cannabidiol compared to THC, but the overall cannabinoid content of industrial hemp will probably be low. Industrial Hemp is genetically bred to produce fiber for various products or seed for omega oil and nutritional supplements. Industrial hemp is generally not bred for resin production. Without selective breeding for cannabidiol content, cannabidiol yields from hemp are likely to be low. Therefore, we specifically breed our hemp plants to enhance the cannabidiol content.
21. Can a grower increase cannabidiol content by manipulating environmental factors?
Contrary to some rumors, a plant cannot be made cannabidiol-rich if it lacks the right genetic make-up. The ratio of THC, cannabidiol, and other cannabinoids is genetically determined, according to a study by biochemist Etienne de Meijer, Inheritance of the Cannabinoid Phenotype. A grower can, however, influence overall cannabinoid content by manipulating environmental factors—temperature, light, water acidity, and nutrients—that affect plant health.
22. Does cannabidiol interact with other medications?
Yes. Cannabidiol inhibits the cytochrome P450 enzyme, which is involved in metabolizing many drugs. Compounds in grapefruit inhibit the same enzyme group; this is why physician’s advise patients not to eat grapefruit shortly before or after taking a medication. By inhibiting cytochrome P450, cannabidiol can either reduce or increase the effects of other drugs. In some situations, it may be advisable for a physician to monitor a patient’s blood levels of other medications while taking cannabidiol.
23. What do you mean when you say a cannabis strain or product is “cannabidiol-rich” or "cannabidiol dominant?
By “cannabidiol-rich,” we mean a cannabis strain or product that has equal amounts of cannabidiol and THC, or more cannabidiol than THC (usually at least 4 percent cannabidiol by dry weight). by “cannabidiol-dominant,” we mean strains or products that are cannabidiol-rich but have very little THC content.
24. If cannabidiol is non-psychoactive, does that mean it is legal?
Cannabidiol and all other plant cannabinoids are Schedule I drugs in the US (per code 7372). So, technically, cannabidiol is forbidden in any form (as an isolate or plant-based derivative) by the Federal Government, even though many U.S. States now support its use and sale.
25. If a hemp extract is 40% cannabinoids, what’s the other 60%?
What’s in your hemp extracts besides the naturally occurring cannabinoids? Our Colorado hemp extracts contain over 80 different phyto-cannabinoids such as cannabidiol, CBC, CBG, CBN, etc. In addition to the cannabinoids naturally present in our agricultural hemp extracts, there are also many other types of natural molecules and phytochemical compounds such as amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins (including B1, B2, B6, D), fatty acids (including omega 3 and 6), trace minerals (including iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, potassium), beta-carotene, chlorophyll, flavonoids, ketones, nitrogenous compounds, alkanes, glycosides, pigments, water, and terpenes. The most common terpenes in our hemp extracts are Myrcene, Beta-caryophyllene, Terpinolene, Linalool, alpha-Pinene, beta-Pinene, Nerolidol og Phytol, trans-alpha-Bergamotene, Limonene/ beta-Phellandrene (Co-elution), and alpha-Humulene.
26. What is industrial hemp?
In the U.S. the legal definition of “industrial hemp,” per Section 7606 of the Agricultural Appropriations Act of 2014, is “INDUSTRIAL HEMP — The term ‘‘industrial hemp’’ means the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any part of such plant, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.”
27. Is a standard hemp seed oil the same as a high-cannabidiol hemp extract?
No! Standard hemp oil, which can be found very cheaply at a grocery store, is a much different product than our full spectrum hemp extracts (not from seed). Standard hemp oil is produced by cold pressing the seeds, whereas our hemp extract is a full-plant extraction with many components not typically found in the seeds. Hemp-seed oil is considered to be a great nutritive food, but it does not have the naturally occurring terpenes, cannabinoids, and other components that our extracts contain.
28. Is your Hemp Extract Oil like Rick Simpson Hemp Oil (RSHO)?
No. Ours are from hemp and RSHO is usually using marijuana, a different form of cannabis, i.e., cannabis Indica, than industrial hemp – cannabis sativa L. Our industrial hemp extracts are more standardized and will usually have a much higher content of non-psychoactive cannabinoids like cannabidiol than one produced through the Rick Simpson method. And oils produced through this method will usually have a much higher THC content, as it is typically marijuana that is used for RSHO. Generally speaking, most marijuana producers and sellers (especially on the black market) don’t test for contaminants (metals, pesticides, bacteria, etc.). Rick Simpson Hemp Oil is more a method of extraction than it is a specific product. People use the Rick Simpson method with hundreds of different strains of marijuana, so the THC, cannabidiol and other cannabinoid content of the final oil always vary greatly, depending on the cannabis the consumers are acquiring. Usually the cannabis variety used for Rick Simpson oil is a strain with a much inferior cannabidiol content (and high THC), because that’s what the vast amount of marijuana is today.
29. Where do you source your hemp and CANNABIDIOL from?
As stated, we are using 100% Colorado-grown hemp in our dietary supplement manufacturing and have been doing so since 2014. Our product is from farm to door. We do not import or solicit raw hemp products from other U.S. states or other countries.
30. What type of extraction method do you employ?
Since our inception, we use ethanol (food grade alcohol) to extract our hemp, the most historically used method for hemp extracts. It is a clean and cold extraction method that allows for optimal retention of terpenes and other sensitive compounds to deliver a full-spectrum product.
31. What kind of testing/analysis is performed on your products?
We have an industry leading quality control system, and we have third party laboratories analyze all our hemp extracts and our final products for cannabinoid potency, heavy metals, bacterial and microbial life, mycotoxins (fungus), and pesticides.
32. What is the endocannabinoid system (ECS)?
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a group of endogenous cannabinoid receptors located in the mammalian brain and throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, consisting of neuro-modulatory lipids and their receptors. There are two main types of receptors in the ECS, which include CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are primarily located in the central nervous system and brains of mammals, and CB2 receptors are generally found in the peripheral nervous system.
There are two main cannabinoids mammals produce- 2AG and Anandamide (named after the Sanskrit term “Ananda,” which translates to “peace”). For hundreds of millions of years every vertebrate on Earth has been equipped with this ECS, a crucial system in the body, and it has been known about in the scientific and medical communities since the 1980’s. Despite this knowledge, it is still not taught in most medical schools.
FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION (FDA) DISCLOSURE: These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any disease. Always check with your physician before starting a new dietary supplement program. Most work-place drug screens and tests target delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and do not detect the presence of Cannabidiol (CBD) or other legal natural hemp based constituents. Studies have shown that eating hemp foods and oils can cause confirmed positive results when screening urine and blood specimens. If you are subject to any form of drug testing or screening, we recommend (as does the United States Armed Services) that you do not ingest or use our products. Consult with your healthcare practicioner, drug screening testing company or employer prior to ingesting or using our the products we sell.
