Hemp Background:

Industrial hemp, the plant from which our products are made, dates to pyramids of Egypt, perhaps further. It has long been used for fiber, clothes, and herbal, as well as countless other uses. Over time, it has become the forgotten plant, but now, industrial hemp, Cannabis Sativa L is making a strong appearance on the global stage. 

From construction to health and wellness products, industrial hemp could well be called a super plant. It has so many uses, many of which are currently untapped.Our products are what are called full spectrum, derived from the whole-plant extract.

In hemp oil, this includes a long list of compounds, such as Cannabinol, Cannabicyclol, Tetrahydrocannabivarin and Cannabichromevarinic Acid. A wide range of over 100 cannabinoids present in the hemp plant work together in what is known as the entourage effect.

Full spectrum extracts also contains a variety of essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, protein, chlorophyll, terpenes, flavonoids, and fiber. When referring to cannabidiol in the hemp plant, it’s important to understand that Hemp contains many cannabinoids (in trace amounts), but the main compounds are cannabidiol and cannabidiolic acid. Because the latter is more abundant in the hemp plant, we must decarboxylate the oil. This process heats the oil and changes cannabidiolic acid to cannabidiol.

Additionally, the whole-plant extracts (full spectrum) include Terpenes.

Methods:

Ethanol Cannabis Extraction – (Food Grade Alcohol) is used to extract cannabidiol for our hemp product manufacturing. It takes longer and is more expensive long-term, but makes our products work as well as they do. The hemp flowers are put into large containers and 200 proof food grade alcohol (ethanol) is poured over them and agitated to remove all the cannabinoids.

The plant/alcohol mixture is then filtered, leaving the alcohol mixture saturated with all the cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. This mixture is heated to around 150 degrees and the alcohol is cooked leaving a product that is filled with the health and wellness qualities of whole-plant extracts.

This whole-plant cannabis oil is also known as full-spectrum extract oil and hemp-oil extract. This oil can be orally administered (in small quantities) or applied directly to the skin such as in face or body creams, ointments, etc. Sublingual (under the tongue) delivery is the preferred method of ingestion of the oil extract.It is convenient for absorption through the oral mucosal membranes in the mouth and provides also for rapid and effective absorption directly into your systemic circulation because of the increased bioavailability of the cannabinoids.

However, while the Endocannabinoid System performs its tasks, experts believe that the function of the ECS is the regulation of homeostasis. They are abundant in the brain and immune system. The Entourage Effect - a Chemical Teamwork. 

This effect was first described in 1998 by Israeli scientists Shimon Ben-Shabat and Raphael Mechoulam. Cannabinoids within the cannabis plant work together (possess synergy) and affect the body in a mechanism similar to the body’s own endocannabinoid system.

In certain cases whole-plant extractions serve as better therapeutic agents than individual cannabinoid extractions. The entourage effect has been expanded in recent times by Wagner and Ulrich-Merzenich, who define the four basic mechanisms of whole-plant extract synergy as follows:

1. Ability to affect multiple targets within the body

2. Ability to improve the absorption of active ingredients

3. Ability to overcome bacterial defense mechanisms

4. Ability to minimize adverse side effects


Affecting Multiple Targets:

Many studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of cannabidiol as a therapeutic agent for muscle spasms associated with multiple sclerosis. A study conducted by Wilkinson and colleagues determined that whole-plant extracts were more effective than THC alone due to the presence of cannabidiol within the cannabis extract, which helps to facilitate the activity of the body’s endocannabinoid system.


Improving Absorption of Active Ingredients:

The entourage effect can also work to improve the absorption of whole-plant extracts. Cannabinoids are chemically polar compounds, which makes them at times difficult for the body to absorb in isolation. With the assistance of terpenoids like caryophyllene, absorption of cannabinoids can be increased.

Absorption of topicals such as our face and body cream, provides a prototypical example of this problem. The skin is made up of two layers, also known as a bi-layer, which makes it difficult for very polar molecules like water and cannabinoids to pass through. With the assistance of terpenoids like caryophyllene, absorption of cannabinoids can be increased, and therapeutic benefits achieved.Overcoming Bacterial Defense Mechanisms.

The entourage effect also accounts for our whole-plant extracts to be effective in treating various bacterial issues. There are several studies that show the antibacterial properties of cannabinoids. Whole-plant cannabis extracts have non-cannabinoid constituents which also have antibacterial properties.

However, bacteria develop defense mechanisms over time to combat the effects of antibiotics ultimately allowing them to become resistant to therapies that were previously effective.Thus, it is beneficial that whole-plant hemp extracts have non-cannabinoid constituents that also have antibacterial properties. These molecules attack bacteria through pathways that differ from cannabinoid pathways. Given the attack on multiple fronts, the development of bacterial resistance is limited.Minimizing Adverse Side Effects.

Finally, the entourage effect allows certain cannabinoids to modulate the negative side effects of other cannabinoids. The most fitting example of this is cannabidiol’s ability to modulate the perceived negative effects of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Many patients have heard about (or experienced) the increased anxiety and paranoia sometimes associated with cannabis consumption. Thanks to the entourage effect, research has shown that cannabidiol can be effective in minimizing the anxiety associated with THC, lowering the users feelings of paranoia. Thus, the two components do not need to compete with each other, but can work in tandem for a variety of health and wellness issues.


Conclusions:

Research that is ongoing around the world illustrate that our products and their interactions with the body can have a life-altering impact on ourselves and the people around us. For example, CB1 receptors are primarily located on nerve cells in the brain, spinal cord, but they are also found in some peripheral organs and tissues such as the spleen, white blood cells, endocrine gland, and parts of the reproductive, gastrointestinal, and urinary tracts. 

In the brain, the CB1 receptors are abundant in the cerebellum, basal ganglia, hippocampus, and dorsal primary afferent spinal cord regions, which is why cannabinoids influence functions such as memory processing, physical discomfort, and motor control. Working in unison, CB2 receptors are mainly found on white blood cells, in the tonsils and in the spleen.

The immune cells also express CB1, although there are fewer of them than CB2.
